OEC Action Fund Condemns Gov. DeWine’s Signing of House Bill 175

Columbus, OH — Governor DeWine today signed House Bill 175 into law. This dirty water bill is designed to remove protections for an estimated 36,000 miles of ephemeral streams in Ohio, opening them up to pollution and degradation.

In response, the following quote can be attributed in full or part to Pete Bucher, Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) Action Fund Program Director:

“At a time when Ohio is investing heavily in water quality improvements through H2Ohio, the state took a step backwards today with Governor DeWine’s signature of House Bill 175. Alongside partners, we had urged Governor DeWine to veto this bill so as to not undermine taxpayer investments being made in the H2Ohio program.

“House Bill 175 fails to protect the important ecological qualities of Ohio’s ephemeral streams, and it also fails to protect the drinking water of millions of Ohioans who rely on water resources fed by these streams. This bill could seriously unravel the progress that’s been made to clean up our rivers, lakes, and streams.

“The OEC Action Fund is deeply disappointed by this harmful legislation becoming law. We remain committed to working with water quality advocates to secure clean and safe water for all Ohioans.”
